The “Recommendations intended for Regional and Local Authorities in order to improve regional strategies of transfer in the fields of micro and nanotechnology” are online!
http://issuu.com/nano4m/docs/nano4mrecommendations
They contain the synthesis of the “Think Tank” of the project, exploring important issues, such as how policies could encourage researchers to pursue marked-oriented results preserving science quality. The Recommendations also analyse possible specific measures regarding RTCs that could be implemented and possible priority markets on which policy makers and RTCs could agree on. Great attention on policy tools, which could help to bring research closer to market.

Avilés (Asturias - Spain): Nano4m partners and authorities at the final conference of the European project.
After three years since its beginning, Nano4m - Nanotechnology for Market has come to its final months. The project, funded by INTERREG IVC, began in fact in October 2008 and is going to end in December 2011. Its total budget is € 1,845,892.00 with an ERDF contribution of € 1,384,419.00. The transnational project involves four regions (Asturias in Spain, Tuscany in Italy, Lorraine in France, North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany) with twelve partners from local governments, research centers and centers of businesses' services. After having met several times in these three years, the partners met for the final conference, which took place in Avilés, Asturias (Spain) on the 29th September, at the ITMA Foundation facilities.

Avilés, Spain: the final conference of nano4m.
The project has reached its final phase: nano4m, funded by INTERREG IVC, began in October 2008 and is going to end in December 2011. On the 29th September the final conference will take place in Avilés, Asturias (Spain) – where the Spanish partners Idepa, Cinn and Fundación Prodintec come from -, at the ITMA Foundation facilities. The conference will take place in the morning; important characters will be present, such as a representative of Interreg IVC Programme (Ms. Marie Lebre), the Regional Minister of Economy and Employment of the Principality of Asturias Mr. José Manuel Rivero Iglesias, Mr. Santiago García Granda - Vice-Chancellor for Research (University of Oviedo), Mr. Nicolas de Abajo – ArcelorMittal, director of Global R&D Asturias Centre and Global R&D Spain, president Fundación ITMA, Mr. Christophe Choserot - Regional Councilor of Lorraine Region. The conference will also be a good opportunity to present some of the regional initiatives paving the way for future collaborations. The second part of the conference will be devoted to project results, with a panel with Technological and Research Centers. In the afternoon, the final Steering Committee meeting will take place. In the morning of Friday 30th, there will be two interesting study visits: one to Asturfeito and another one to Arcelor-Mittal, both companies based in Avilés.

Metz (Lorraine – France): important political representatives at the “Think Tank” of Nano4m.
Experts and political representatives met in Metz (Lorraine – France) on the 15th June 2011 for a European round-table, which focused on the development of guidelines for technology transfer and on improving services and research centers. This event – called “Think Tank” - was an important step of the transnational project Nano4m - Nanotechnology for Market, which is funded by the European Programme INTERREG IVC (with an ERDF contribution). The “Think Tank” was attended by representatives of local political and technical authorities of the Regions participants in the project (Asturias in Spain, Tuscany in Italy, Lorraine in France, and North Westphalia in Germany). Policy makers, who attended the event, belong to different areas of responsibility, such as industrial policy, clusters, technology transfer, entrepreneurs. Authorities discussed new tools and plans that might help RT Centres to find their way into the market.

Nano4m Newsletter n.3 - July 2011
Nano4m
- Nanotechnology for Market a transnational project, which involves 12 European partners from Tuscany (Italy), North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany), Lorraine (France) and Asturias (Spain), has a three-year-duration. The project, funded by INTERREG IVC, began in October 2008 and now it is in its last phase.
Its total budget is € 1,845,892.00 with an ERDF contribution of € 1,384,419.00.
This European Project addresses to all the Regional and Local Institutions and the Research Centres involved in the partnership, which will easily access the information concerning the state and the methodology of nanotechnology development. It also addresses to policy-makers and Local, National, European stakeholders, Companies and their Associations, Universities, Research Centres, as well as private citizens.

The final version of the Guidelines is online, click here!
The Guidelines are a key tool for defining market oriented strategic plans for Research & Technology Centers, aiming at providing introductory notions on most aspects that emerge when implementing a market-oriented strategy.
The final draft of the “Guidelines for Nanotechnology and Microtechnology Research and Technology Centres for improvement of market-oriented strategies” was approved during the meeting in Münster, in February 2011, and the final version was ready in June 2011. The main purpose of the Guide is to inspire RTC leadership into adopting best practices that have proven to work in peer RTCs that have become familiar with in Nano4m project.

nano4m, which involves four regions and twelve partners, aims at improving strategies and building networks to design nanotechnology for market. The project tackles some of the challenges identified in relation to the functioning of the regional innovation systems with the following objectives:

To improve the regions’ capacity to shorten the gap between R&D and market testing new Research-to-Market processes (R2M)

To strengthen the interregional collaboration by identifying and developing specific research and business opportunities of common interest in the emerging field of nano/microtechnology

To increase competitiveness of innovation infrastructure at regional, national and European level

To improve the efficiency of regional innovation policies by drawing recommendations and implementing best practices.

The Project has three phases

PHASE 1: By June 2009, maps of research and business activity related to micro- and nano-technology have been created to identify opportunities of common interest. Additionally some critical aspects related to Technology Transfer processes have been selected and analysed.

PHASE 2: By December 2010, refinements have been drafted for the technology transfer strategies of public research and technology centres, based on studies and expert meetings carried out in the Project.

PHASE 3: By December 2011, the partners will make recommendations to regional authorities with the goal of improving technology transfer policies and initiatives. These recommendations will contain conclusions based on the technology transfer strategies implemented in the research and technology centres. Opportunities for future cooperation among regional governments in the domain of technology transfer will also be explored.
